About This Speaker

Dr. Stephanie Nixon is a straight, white, middle class, able-bodied, cisgender, settler woman of English and Irish ancestry who strives to understand the pervasive effects of privilege, and what to do with and about it. Stephanie leads the consulting firm, Stephanie Nixon and Associates Inc. She is also a Full Professor, Vice Dean (Health Sciences) and Director (School of Rehabilitation Therapy) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. She completed her PhD in Public Health at the University of Toronto and a post-doc at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Nixon later joined the University of Toronto as a professor for 15 years.

Dr. Stephanie Nixon developed the Coin of Privilege. This model explains how historic systems of inequality create unearned advantage (privilege) for some and unearned disadvantage (oppression) for others. It provides a non-judgmental framework for people in positions of privilege to recognize their role in upholding systemic injustice. The model then guides these individuals toward practicing Critical Allyship to resist and dismantle these harmful structures.

This keynote expects that everyone brings a level of experience and expertise to the table, and builds on existing insight to deepen understanding of anti-oppression and anti-racist action.
