About This Speaker
Dwayne Morgan is a celebrated spoken word artist, author, and motivational speaker, appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2023. A two-time Canadian National Poetry Slam Champion, Morgan began his spoken word career in 1993. In 1994, he founded Up From The Roots Entertainment, dedicated to showcasing the positive artistic contributions of African Canadian and urban-influenced artists.
Recognized as one of Shifter Magazine’s 2022 Outstanding Black Men in Canada, Dwayne has also received the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Celebration of Cultural Life Award. He was a 2016 finalist for the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, inducted into the Scarborough Walk of Fame in 2013, and honored with both the African Canadian Achievement Award and the Harry Jerome Award for Excellence in the Arts.
Dwayne has performed for global leaders including Barack Obama, Michaëlle Jean, and Jack Layton. He has shared stages with top Canadian talent like Russell Peters, opened for Alicia Keys, and collaborated with artists such as Drake. His creative output includes 16 published works, among them two children’s books and an inspirational memoir, as well as 10 spoken word albums, including the holiday release Silent Night. His 2009 French-translated work, Le Making of d’un Homme, broadened his reach internationally.
Morgan has produced TV shows (Poetically Speaking, Write in Toronto), co-produced the Toronto Spoken Soul Festival, and performed his one-man play Grade 8 on CBC’s PlayMe Podcast. He premiered the short film Three Knocks at Toronto’s ReelWorld Film Festival, and performed at Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.
With performances across North America, Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa, Dwayne Morgan continues to influence the global spoken word scene. His dedication to quality and community has made him a respected voice in Toronto’s urban arts landscape and beyond.
